How Much Does a Website Cost in South Africa?

A plain-language guide for 2026

A small-business website costs two things: a once-off amount to design and build it, and a smaller ongoing amount to keep it online. Updated 29 September 2026.

The short answer

For a small business, expect a once-off cost for the design and build, plus roughly R85–R110 a month for hosting and R50–R110 a year for a .co.za domain. What makes the once-off price go up or down is how much is done for you: writing the words, designing a logo, selling online, or connecting to other systems.

As a real example, our Digital Launchpad costs R6,850 once-off and includes a logo, a 5-page website, copywriting, stock photos, your domain and your email setup. After 2 free months, hosting is R89 a month, and the domain renews at R109 a year from year two.

Three ways to get a website

  • A DIY website builder. You pay a monthly subscription (often charged in US dollars) and do the design, writing, photos and email setup yourself. Cheap to start; costs your time.
  • A freelancer. Prices vary widely. Check exactly what's included, and who hosts the site and fixes it after launch.
  • A studio or agency. A team designs, writes, builds and often hosts the site. Costs more upfront, but the work is done for you and there's someone to call later.

What changes the price

  • Number of pages. Most small businesses need about five: home, about, services, contact and one more.
  • Who writes the words. Copywriting is often an extra. Without it, the project stalls waiting for your text.
  • Branding. A logo, colours and fonts are sometimes quoted separately from the website.
  • Selling online. An online store needs product pages, a checkout and card payments (for example PayFast or Yoco). Ours start at R12,500.
  • Custom features. Bookings, client logins or connections to other software add development time.

The ongoing costs

These keep your website and email working every month and year after launch:

  • Hosting: where your website and email live. Entry-level plans at South Africa's larger hosts cost roughly R84–R109 a month (checked September 2026).
  • Domain: your web address. A .co.za is often discounted in the first year, then renews at roughly R85–R110 a year. A .com costs more, typically R250–R400 a year.
  • Maintenance: updates, small changes and security. Optional, but someone has to do it.

Hidden costs to ask about before you sign

Two quotes with the same headline price can end up very different. Ask:

  • Is the logo included, or quoted separately?
  • Who writes the words for my pages?
  • Are the domain registration and email accounts included? What do they cost from year two?
  • Who hosts the site, and what does that cost per month after launch?
  • What happens if something breaks after launch? Is there an aftercare period?
  • Do I own the domain and the website when the project is paid?
